My eyes are always bigger than my garden plot.

Know what I love about January? Seed shopping. Planning, dreaming, imagining the taste of fresh garden produce before I’ve even planted a single seed.

Today, we traveled down the backroads in Missouri to one of my favorite seed houses, Baker Creek Seeds in Mansfield. It is always so worth the trip.

Apparently I am not the only one who gets garden-restless in January: Amidst the bustle and hustle of employees pulling seed packets for orders while laughing and talking to customers with a smile, there are also rows and rows of all kinds of seeds. Rows and rows! Heirlooms and non-hybrids galore, along with an impressive bookshelf of a vast variety of helpful gardening and cooking books. They sell most of this online as well, and their yearly catalog is my favorite… but nothing beats the pleasure of going in person. Nothing. I try to get up here at least once a year.

Check it out, request a catty, shop around! You can thank me later.

  1. Jealous. I am so jealous of you right now.

My entire yard is surrounded by trees, so I get about 10% of daylight. In other words, I cannot plant a garden of any sort. (However, I have been successful with herbs in a planter in the sun that I do get. So I got that going for me.)

No tomatoes. No squash. No cucumbers, carrots, celery, lettuce. None. All because of the trees surrounding my yard. Maybe I need to invest in a chainsaw?

So jealous right now….you’ve no idea. πŸ™‚

  2. You need to get a catalog from this place! And start researching chainsaws:)

  3. I’m already planning mine this year. We have a ton of grape vines already, and I’ve cleared out a spot for a garden. Plus we are going to do some fresh herbs this year too. Combine that with the fact that I get most of my seafood from my family and I am set. This year I plan on taking a few shrimping trips myself and stocking up.

Have fun with yours! You’ve inspired me to move forward with my own even more.

  4. I am so JEALOUS that you have a place where you can plant seeds of any kind. I can’t even get tomatoes to grow anywhere in my yard. I am going to try one more location–then I will probably give up on that, but I LOVE fresh veggies. I can get some of my herbs to grow in the kitchen and deck. πŸ˜€ Pics of your yummy veggies please! πŸ˜€
